Katakolon, Olympia – Greece

Sailing into Katakolon, Greece is very picturesque. However, there is not a lot to see or do around the harbour, so it is defiantly recommended that a day tour is booked.

Border crossing to Mexico

Crossing the Border to Mexico

Border Crossing

Several years ago Nigel and I took a trip to North America and spent several weeks travelling from Southern California to Vancouver in Canada.  As a part of this trip we spent one week in Rosarito on the Baja Peninsula in Mexico.

We decided to make this trip a little different and our travel from Anaheim to Rosarito didn’t follow the usual tourist route.  We boarded an Amtrak train at Anaheim Station for the two hour trip to San Diego – this was nothing out of the ordinary except,  after some extravagant shopping in LA we now had a total of nine pieces of luggage.  On the train this didn’t pose a problem but at San Diego we transferred to the tram which would take us to the border at Tijuana.  This part of the journey took well over half an hour and, as the tram was very crowded, we had to stand the entire time – balancing our entire luggage and trying not to inconvenience other passengers.  Most other people on the tram gave us odd glances wondering just what we were up to.  Still, we arrived at the border safely and got of the tram with all our bags still intact.

Most people who cross the US/Mexico border at Tijuana do so in vehicles; but we were on foot Continue reading Border crossing to Mexico

Facts, Fiction and History of Bridge

The Facts and Fiction and History of Bridge

Believe me, there was a time in the past when there were no computers, television sets, telephones, fax machines or cars, but people still came together and played card games. They would play in taverns, inns, at countryside homes, in royal palaces, in the mansions of the rich, in the private rooms of the clergy. Every nation, kingdom and state would have card players battling each other in the afternoons and evenings on every night of the week. It was a pastime, a way of filling the evening with fun and games.

Nobody remembers who invented the first deck of cards. Nobody remembers who named the suits and designed the graphics. And today we have all kinds of cards: trading cards, credit cards, greeting cards, baseball cards, tarot cards. Bridge cards, of course, have a history as does the game itself. It was not always called Bridge, and many still believe that it is an ancient game. But, in comparison, Bridge is a relatively new game derived from an older version. The refinement came about in the early 1900′s and has continued to this day. Following are some historical moments in Bridge. Continue reading Facts, Fiction and History of Bridge
